Bill Mason while working for the Shell Motor Company's film unit assembled an impressive series of documentaries that trace the history of motor racing. The first film shows the early years as Panhards raced against Mercedes. The German Kaiser showed up at the races. The French Grand Prix with Lancia, Fiat, Renault and Hotchkiss squaring off. Talbot races Delage at Brooklands. Accidents abound. George Boillot becomes a star. This clip from the Early Motion Picture collection was filmed 1905 and scanned on HD format. The view on Manhattans Theatre District is from the top of the then newly-erected Times Building, at a height of approximately twenty stories. The photographer makes a pan to the north over the tops of the buildings from Bryant Park, south of 42nd Street (behind the New York Public Library) up 6th Avenue to the Hippodrome Theatre at 43rd Street. A marquee on the theater reads "A Yankee Circus On Mars." With the flapper era bringing in a new breed of girls, bathing beauty contests were popping up in cities throughout the United States. Miss America beauty contest began in Atlantic City in 1921. Chicago capitalized on this trend in 1922 by starting the Miss Chicago contest, which is still held yearly, and Texas followed suit in 1926, creating the International Pageant of Pulchritude (a fancy word meaning beauty), which became the Miss Universe competition. Chicago is a significant transportation hub in the States. It does a lot of things in a big way. Not surprisingly Chicago has a great deal of big buildings. It is a major world financial center, with the second largest central business district in the United States. Mata Hari is the stage name of Margaretha Geertruida (Grietje) Zelle. He was born on August 7, 1876 in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands and died on October 15, 1917 in Vincennes, France who was sentenced to death for spying in World War I <img alt="" class=" wp-image-17126 aligncenter" height="273" src="http://oldpicsarchive.online/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/800px-Mata_Hari_15-300x200.jpg" width="410" /> 100 years ago Mata Hari faced the firing squad as a convicted Dutch spy. It was at this moment that the legend of Mata Hari, the seductive spy, was born. Newly-discovered documents cast doubt on her guilt and reveal startling truths about her life. Mata Hari was a self-made woman whose boldness and sexuality threatened the male establishment. Most of what we've known about her until now has largely been myth. Late 19th-century New York City was a magnet for the world’s immigrants, and the vast majority of them found not streets paved with gold but nearly subhuman squalor. While polite society turned a blind eye, brave reporters like the Danish-born Jacob Riis documented this shame of the Gilded Age. Riis did this by venturing into the city’s most ominous neighborhoods with his blinding magnesium flash powder lights, capturing the casual crime, grinding poverty and frightful overcrowding. Most famous of these was Riis’ image of a Lower East Side street gang, which conveys the danger that lurked around every bend. There are many apps these days which claim to colorize with a click of a button your old black & white photographs, but these compare poorly to the work of a real artist. I’ve seen many good colorists over the years, but none compare to the artistry of Russian woman Olga Shirnina, who has perfected it. Working under the name Klimbim, her work has gone viral over the past few years when she began breathing new life into Russian history, from the Romanov family archive to the Red Army. My personal favorites are her colorized portraits of Abraham Lincoln and Che Guevera.
